What is renewable clean energy?

Renewable clean energy is energy that does not pollute our air, water and land when used.  When we think of renewable clean energy, we typically think of electricity created by wind, solar, nuclear or hydro-power. We also think of geothermal heat and biofuels such as ethanol, biodiesel and clean diesel fuels.  Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.  Renewable fuels are derived from plants, animal and human waste materials.

Another term used for renewable energy is “green energy.” Green energy is an umbrella term used to encompass any sort of alternative energy that is produced with less negative impact upon our natural environment than ‘non-green’ energy sources such as fossil fuels.  Wind, solar and hydro-energy are commonly used examples of “green energy” sources.

Benefits of renewable energy:

Renewable energy improves health and environmental quality. Electricity generated from renewable energy rather than fossil fuels offer significant public health, environmental and economic benefits.

Renewable energy saves lives, reduces the number of lost work days and overall health care costs.  The burning of fossil fuels emits carbon pollution into our air and water which has been linked to breathing problems, neurological damaged heart attacks and cancer.

Renewable energy provides a diverse, inexhaustible, reliable energy supply. The diversity of renewable energy sources has tremendous potential to offer all the electricity a nation needs many times over if properly harnessed and managed well.

Economic benefits of renewable energy:

Harnessing renewable energy is more labor intensive, as compared to fossil fuels, which is typically mechanized and capital intensive. On average, it creates a lot of jobs for each unit of electricity generated from renewable sources than fossil fuels.  Increasing renewable energy has real potential to continue still job addition and energy technology creates thousands upon thousands of jobs in various capacities in the United States; particularly in the wind and solar industries.  These job gains have helped to reduce the unemployment rate in today’s economy.
